Diabetes Mellitus
Diabetes mellitus (Diabetes) is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by high blood sugar (glucose) levels, which result from defects in insulin secretion, or action, or
both. Diabetes mellitus means "sweet urine". High concentrations of
blood glucose (hyperglycemia) lead to a leakage of glucose into the urine i.e..
the term sweet urine.
Normally, the bodies blood glucose levels are tightly controlled by insulin.
Insulin is hormone produced by the pancreas and insulin lowers the bodies blood
glucose levels. When your bodies blood glucose elevates (after eating a meal) insulin
is released from the pancreas to normalize the glucose level. Those who have diabetes
mellitus will have insufficient production of insulin causing hyperglycemia.
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic medical condition, meaning it can last a
lifetime
