Diabetes Information
Diabetes Mellitus or more commonly referred to as "Diabetes" is a
disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin,
which is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other foods
into energy, is needed for daily life. Over 18 million people in the US alone
have been diagnosed with Diabetes, which is over 6.3% of the population.
There are two major types of Diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. Type 1
results from the body's failure to produce insulin which is the hormone that
enables the body to allow glucose into cells and fuel them. It is estimated that
up to 10% of Americans who are diagnosed with Diabetes have type 1 diabetes. Type 2 results from the bodies resistance to insulin (the body fails to use the
insulin properly). Most Americans who are diagnosed with Diabetes have type 2
Diabetes.
